How do I price a kitchen remodel estimate?
Line by line. Every line is rate times quantity times multiplier: tear-out per square foot, cabinets per linear foot, countertops per square foot, labor by the day. Units are labels; the math is the same. What moves your number is scope: wall and structural changes, how far the plumbing and electrical move, cabinet and countertop grade, appliance count. Real quantities at your own rates make each line defensible, and the P&L shows what's left for you after costs.
How do I handle deposits and mid-job surprises?
There's an informational deposit line you can add at the document level, plus an overhead and profit fee as a percentage of the subtotal and a discount. For the parts of a kitchen that stay unknown until demo, the units do the work: subfloor repair is priced per sheet and debris removal per cubic yard, so when tear-out shows the real condition you adjust a quantity instead of rewriting the estimate.
